Although medical science doesn’t know the exact reason why humans sleep, there is evidence of the neurophysiologic effects of sleep. These include: enhanced concentration, enhanced mood, reduction of stress effects, an optimized immune system, and pain inhibition. Sleep interruption caused by upper airway resistance, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are collectively referred to as sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and can cause many unwanted symptoms for our Airdrie and Calgary sleep apnea clients.

When SDB is present and untreated, the effects carry over to the next day, leaving you feeling tired and drowsy and seriously affecting the body’s ability to function. Left untreated, it also increases the risk of obesity, heart attacks and strokes. Fortunately, SDB and OSA are easily identified by our Airdrie and Calgary sleep apnea patients using a diagnostic sleep device in the comfort of your own home.

Once diagnosed there are several options for treating SDB: CPAP, surgery, or oral appliances. Dr. Blunston, Airdrie cosmetic dentist, uses a variety of oral appliances to reposition your jaw and tongue while you sleep, keeping your airway open and in turn reducing or eliminating apnea events.
